Sheila Reid Named Finalist for Track & Field Honda Sports Award


The Collegiate Women Sports Awards announced today the four nominees for the 2010-2011 Honda Sports Award, which goes to the top woman collegiate athlete in track and field. The four nominees are Texas A&M's Jessica Beard, Kimberlyn Duncan of LSU, Florida State's Kim Williams, and Villanova's Sheila Reid.

Jessica Beard, from Euclid, Ohio won the NCAA title last weekend in the 400 meters and anchored Texas A&M's national championship 4 x 400 relay team. Kimberlyn Duncan, from Katy, Texas finished as NCAA champion in the 200 meters and was second in the 100 meters. Kim Williams, who hails from Kingston, Jamaica and competes in the jumps, was national runner-up in the triple jump and was 13th in the long jump. Villanova's Sheila Reid, from Newmarket, Ontario, became the first woman in NCAA history to win both the 1500 and 5000 meter national titles in a single championship meet. Reid is also the reigning national champion in cross country.

After nationwide balloting, the winner will become a candidate for The Honda-Broderick Cup awarded annually to the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Now in its 35th year, the Collegiate Women Sports Awards honors 15 outstanding female athletes from NCAA-member schools every year. In addition to the honor of this selection, American Honda will donate $1,000 to the women's athletic fund of each nominee's university. The athlete chosen as the Honda Sports Award recipient for track and field will receive $5,000.

Previous track and field athletes chosen as the overall Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year include Julie Shea of North Carolina State (1979-80), Vicki Huber of Villanova (1988-89) and Suzy Favor of Wisconsin (1989-90).
